There has been much discussion of the impact of our city budget crisis on our public services. At risk are the Mastick Center, Library services, Fire protection, Alameda Hospital and the public schools. The City Council majority says the crisis is due to the global fiscal crunch, yet wants to accept a development master plan for Alameda Point that will bond the city to future indebtedness in the amount of either $240 million dollars (what the city staff tells the public) or $700 million dollars (what the SunCal Companies draft master plan indicates) for renewal of the infrastructure. This is a huge public subsidy to the SunCal Companies, financially backed by D. E. Shaw, a hedge fund that is a major stock holder in at least one company that has filed for bankruptcy. SunCal has defaulted on a number of projects in and out of California. Why is the City Council continuing to business with SunCal/D.E.Shaw?

The city leaders admit that Alameda is facing serious cutbacks, yet continue to spend money on consultants, over-paid senior managers, a swollen Redevelopment agency bureaucracy that has its own city hall (“City Hall West”), etc. Further impacting the City and potentially putting it into bankruptcy are lawsuits for over $24 million arising out of the mismanagement and negligence of the elected officials and city staff (AP&T, Pleasanton sales tax, the Dr. Attari case).

Hear various stakeholders speak to these issues with audience participation.
