With the world riveted on all the upheaval in the Middle East, it is easy to lose sight of the role Africa plays on the world stage, particularly with regard to the struggle for oil and mineral rights, within a complex matrix of ethnic conflict. Join us for a panel discussion on the Crisis in Africa with Professors Martha Saavedra, Barry Schutz and David Skinner.
Professor Martha Saavedra is the Associate Director of the Center for African Studies at University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Saavedra's research includes agrarian politics and ethnic conflict in Sudan, and gender and sports in Senegal and elsewhere in Africa. She is currently working on the question of Islam, sport and gender in Africa. She serves on the executive board of the West African Research Association.
Professor David Skinner has researched the development and significance of Islam in West Africa. Dr. Skinner teaches African and West African history and politics and modern world history at Santa Clara University.
Professor Barry Schutz is currently Adjunct Professor of Government at Mills College and of Political Science in the Stanford Continuing Studies Program. He is also Visiting Scholar in African Studies at Sanford University. He is a retired Senior Analyst from the Office of African Analysis at the Department of State. Specializing in African affairs, he is a former Professor of Strategic Studies at Georgetown University National Security Studies Program, the National Defense Intelligence College and the Naval Postgraduate School. He is currently working on a book on Oil Politics in the Gulf of Guinea.
